Doug Stanhope: Before Turning The Gun On Himself (2012)

Doug Stanhope Before Turning The Gun On Himself (2012)

Let’s get this out of the way Before I start – if you’re easily offended, then Doug Stanhope is not for you. Even if you don’t think you’re easily offended, Doug will test your limits to breaking point. But (and this is a BIG but) if you find that you can get past your own notions of taste and decency, and actually listen to what Stanhope has to say, and I mean really listen, then his new DVD Before Turning The Gun On Himself might just be the best stand up set you’ve seen this year.

Vulgar, opinionated, yet at the same time disarmingly honest, U.S. stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope is guaranteed to entertain, shock, and enlighten.

Understandably compared by many to both Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce due to the ferocity of some of his material, Stanhope is unequivocally his own man in the manner with which he too is happy to give the very foundations of American values a brutally comedic kicking.

Recorded in an abandoned factory in the Grünerløkka suburb of Oslo, Norway, the performance is as spontaneous and unhinged as anything Stanhope has ever done. Originally a sewing machine factory converted to a German WWII bunker, the setting for Oslo is anything but conventional.

Whereas most comedy specials are filmed on an elaborate stage, Stanhope and Nikon Norway filled a dilapidated industrial space with lights and folding chairs, ultimately allowing the material be the focus of this release.

Staying true to declaring that his comedy is not for everyone, Doug Stanhope's animated performance and his incorporation of his audience shows that his more than a decade as a road comic hasn't been fruitless.

Encouraging his audience to be loud and disruptive fuels his material, spiking it with a opportunities to play his audience, even make jokes at their expense.

Stanhope rips apart airport security, making fun of guys standing around in camouflage, "who haven't done push-ups in five years." Before tearing into the hypocrisy he despises in the U.S. Government, he takes a moment to make fun of bin Laden, and his current uselessness; saying, "bin Laden can't get one muslim to leave a flaming bag of dog crap on an American doorstep and ring the bell."

Not all stand-up comedy is spot-cleaned and pre-packaged for the masses. Like the legends who were born out of smoky, booze-soaked nightclubs of decades past, Doug Stanhope spews his own brand of moral outrage in an unmatched style that borders on self-destruction. Nothing is sacred, no subject off-limits and most importantly nothing is contrived.

From critically acclaimed appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to regular appearances on The Howard Stern Show, Stanhope always shows an intelligence and brutal honesty in his comedy, no mater how viciously graphic or unsettling the material may be.
